Overview

Looking to get started with your first African Safari? If you’ve never before been to Africa, you’ve so much to look forward to. But choosing where to go on your first safari can be quite daunting.

Kenya has been doing safaris since the very concept was invented, and safari actually means 'journey' in Swahili. Nowhere in Africa has a more professional safari industry than Kenya’s, and with that experience comes a rare combination of infrastructure and service. There are hundreds of excellent lodges and tented camps, standards of service from local staff are generally high, and they’ve mastered the logistics of moving between national parks for each leg of your safari itinerary.

Kenya’s wildlife offering is also outstanding. The main safari circuit takes in the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, with Tsavo West, Tsavo East and Samburu popular add-ons. Any combination of these parks should ensure ample sightings of big cats, plenty of elephants, a few rhinos, and all of the plains game, such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and all manner of gazelle and antelope species. Extend your stay by a week and you could even scale Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak.

Nothing can quite compare to your first safari experience in Kenya, and this itinerary is designed to let first-time visitors experience all the magic of this wonderful destination. You will have the chance to view the full spectrum of wildlife that inhabits Kenya, of course including the famous Big 5. Not only will you have the chance to enjoy incredible safari experiences including bush walks as well as the more traditional game drives, but this will also be done while staying at some of the most luxurious camps around, ensuring you don’t ever have to go without your creature comforts. This is an amazing opportunity to truly get to know Kenya, and after this first visit, you’re sure to be yearning to return time and time again.

Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN NAIROBI

Welcome to Kenya. You shall meet one of our representatives at the airport and be transferred to your hotel. You'll be briefed on the code of conduct and what is expected from your safari itinerary as you prepare to kick off your safari to Aberdares.

DAY 2: EXPLORE THE HIGHLANDS AND WILDLIFE IN ABERDARES

Kenyan Highlands, Forest Elephants, huge herds of buffalos and uninterrupted views of Mt. Kenya is what await you in the Aberdares. Subtly coined the Scotland of Kenya, this region shares similar climatic conditions to Scotland, with snow being the only exception. Game drives are rewarding and as an introductory destination to Kenya Safari, you'll get a glimpse of the history of Kenya's Safari.

A typical game drive will give you an opportunity to spot the Forest Elephants, Bongo, Buffaloes and hyenas. The park is also home to a wide variety of bird life including BulbulShrikes, and Sparrows among others.

Breakfast is included, with lunch always served at the lodge. Later in the evening, you'll be transferred back to the lodge for dinner and accommodation.

DAY 3: EXPLORE THE FLAMINGOS & THE HOT SPRINGS OF LAKE BOGORIA

Lake Bogoria is a saline-alkaline lake that lies in a volcanic region, a little north of the equator. The lake is covered with endless swarms of bright, pink flamingoes. Dotting this lake and surrounding areas, steamy hot springs enhance the already dreamlike atmosphere. Now add in the sight of numerous bubbling geysers erupting along the banks and from within the lake itself.

Explore the lake on foot, glimpsing at the many geysers. The birdlife here is wonderful, so keep an eye on some rare species.

Breakfast is included, with lunch always served at the lodge. Later in the evening, you'll be transferred back to the lodge for dinner and accommodation.

DAY 4: HIKING/CYCLING AT HELL'S GATE NATIONAL PARK

The park was used as inspiration for the award-winning Lion King Animation. The landscape here is surreal and offers a safe haven for wildlife as there are no predators here, making it safe for one to walk or cycle around the park. Get up-close with giraffes, zebras and gazelles as you traverse through the park, either on foot, cycling or in your vehicle. Safari walks are always conducted with an armed ranger.

DAY 5: EXPLORE MAASAI MARA, HOME TO THE BIG FIVE & WILDEBEEST MIGRATION.

With its huge concentration of Wildlife, Maasai Mara is among the best parks for a truly remarkable African Safari. The biggest highlight of any Mara adventure is the annual wildebeest migration, crossing over from Serengeti into Mara for greener pastures.

Begin each day with a thrilling 4x4 game drive in the reserve. The pièce de résistance being top sightings include the river crossings when the wildebeest have to navigate their way past giant crocodiles lying in wait in the water. Such is the abundance of wildlife here that visitors can expect great game viewing at any time of year.

You can opt to have your lunch inside the park while on your game drive. You can also opt for a Maasai Village Visit to have a taste of their culture including participating in their dances, drinking milk mixed with blood, making fire from hardwood and softwood and while at it, having a chance to buy their artefacts.

DAY 6: END OF SAFARI

Bid farewell to Maasai Mara with a morning game drive as you transit back to Nairobi for your departing flight.
