The Land of a Thousand Hills, Privately Explored

Rwanda has become one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations: compact, exceptionally well run, and just three hours from Kigali to a face-to-face encounter with mountain gorillas. Volcanic peaks, ancient rainforest, and open savannah sit within a single day’s drive of each other, connected by some of the best roads on the continent.

Every Rwanda safari George Nchau’s team builds is private, ours alone, never a shared vehicle or joining group. That matters most here: gorilla permits are limited and non-transferable, so securing the right dates months in advance is part of the job, alongside pairing each trekking route to your group’s fitness level and working eco-conscious lodges into the itinerary that meet our own sustainability standards.

Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla Trekking & Golden Monkeys

Rwanda holds more than 600 of the roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas left on Earth, all within Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forests. A trek here means a few hours’ climb followed by an hour with a habituated family: a silverback at rest, juveniles tumbling nearby, a mother with an infant pressed close. Permits are capped and booked out well ahead, which is exactly why we secure them early on your behalf.

Golden monkey trekking runs alongside it as a lighter, equally rewarding morning: smaller primates moving fast through the bamboo canopy, and a shorter, gentler hike than the gorilla trek if your group wants both in one visit.

Akagera National Park

Big Five Country, By Land and Water

Akagera is Rwanda’s answer to the classic East African plain: lions, leopards, elephants, rhino, and buffalo across open savannah bordering Tanzania. Game drives here run at dawn and dusk, when predators are most active, and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema adds a slower-paced option for spotting hippos and over 500 recorded bird species, including the shoebill stork.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

One of Africa's Oldest Rainforests

Nyungwe protects 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, across a canopy that has stood largely undisturbed for millennia. Its suspended canopy walkway sits 60 metres above the forest floor, and guided nature walks reveal chameleons, orchids, and birdlife you won’t find in the savannah parks.

Lodges Built Around the Landscape

We work exclusively with lodges that match the setting: Bisate Lodge’s villas overlooking the Virunga volcanoes near Volcanoes National Park, and Magashi Camp’s tented rooms above Akagera’s plains. Many itineraries end with a night or two on Lake Kivu, a natural transition from wildlife-watching to open water and terraced hillside coffee farms along the Congo Nile Trail.

Our Commitment

Why Rwanda Safaris with Kwezi Safaris

01

Private, Always

No shared vehicles and no joining a group trek — your itinerary, your pace, from the moment you land in Kigali.

02

Permits Secured Early

Gorilla permits are limited and sell out months ahead. We handle the booking, timing, and paperwork before you ever have to think about it.

03

Guides Who Know the Trails

Our team matches trekking routes to your group’s fitness level and pairs each park with the right lodge and pace.

Beyond the Parks

Rwanda’s history and culture add real depth to a safari here. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund covers ongoing gorilla research, the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a sober and important stop for those who want it, and Iby’iwacu Cultural Village near Volcanoes offers traditional dance, basket weaving, and craft demonstrations run by the local community.

Getting There & Practicalities

Kigali International Airport connects directly to major hubs in Europe, the Middle East, and East Africa, and Rwanda’s online visa process is straightforward. Kigali is consistently ranked among Africa’s safest and cleanest cities, English is widely spoken, and the road network between parks is some of the best on the continent — a real advantage when your itinerary covers three parks in one trip.
