Rwanda’s accommodation decisions are shaped by two things: gorilla permits and geography. Lodges near Volcanoes National Park carry a premium tied directly to permit scarcity and exclusivity, not simply luxury for its own sake, while Rwanda’s compact size, Kigali to any of its four national parks in 2 to 3 hours by road, means the usual “which region first” planning that dominates Kenya or Tanzania matters less here.

A Rwanda gorilla permit runs $1,500 per person, nearly double Uganda’s $800, and lodges near Volcanoes National Park price accordingly: shorter transfer times from Kigali, generally more polished properties, and a premium built around permit exclusivity rather than dΓ©cor alone. Nyungwe Forest and Akagera, further from that specific pressure, sit at a more moderate price point for chimpanzee tracking and Big Five game drives respectively.
Kigali sits roughly 2 to 3 hours from Volcanoes National Park and about the same from Akagera in the opposite direction, all on consistently well-maintained roads. That compactness means a single week can realistically combine gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and a Big Five safari without an internal flight, a genuinely different planning problem from Kenya or Tanzania’s larger distances.
