Rwanda holds more than 600 of the roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas left on Earth, all within Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forests. A trek here means a few hours’ climb followed by an hour with a habituated family: a silverback at rest, juveniles tumbling nearby, a mother with an infant pressed close. Permits are capped and booked out well ahead, which is exactly why we secure them early on your behalf.
Golden monkey trekking runs alongside it as a lighter, equally rewarding morning: smaller primates moving fast through the bamboo canopy, and a shorter, gentler hike than the gorilla trek if your group wants both in one visit.
Akagera is Rwanda’s answer to the classic East African plain: lions, leopards, elephants, rhino, and buffalo across open savannah bordering Tanzania. Game drives here run at dawn and dusk, when predators are most active, and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema adds a slower-paced option for spotting hippos and over 500 recorded bird species, including the shoebill stork.
Nyungwe protects 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, across a canopy that has stood largely undisturbed for millennia. Its suspended canopy walkway sits 60 metres above the forest floor, and guided nature walks reveal chameleons, orchids, and birdlife you won’t find in the savannah parks.
