Overview

Governors’ Camp is Africa’s first permanent tented camp, remaining in its original site since 1972. Governors’ Camp occupies the best wildlife viewing location in the Reserve, nestled in the riverine forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, its waters teeming with bird-life, hippos and crocodiles. It is perfect for couples, families and friends wanting to experience the best of what a safari in the Masai Mara has to offer.

The entire camp is under canvas with all of the comforts of a luxury hotel. Some of the 25 tents line the riverbank, tucked into the forest, they enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River, while others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. The tents are big, bright and allow in lots of natural light. All tents are classic safari style, each with en-suite bathrooms and a private verandah. There is a bar tent with a deck overlooking the Mara River and a dining tent with amazing views over the plains. Eco-Tourism Kenya has awarded Governors’ Camp a GOLD rating for its sustainability efforts and environmentally friendly practices.

Food and Drink Experience at Governors Camp

Food quality

The food at the Governor's Camps is surprisingly good for a more economical camp. In recent years, the camp has collaborated with talented chefs to enhance the menu. When the camp is quiet, meals are often served à la carte; however, when full, they are typically offered as a buffet.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, including a full cooked breakfast along with fruit, cereals, yogurts, and various breads and pastries. Many guests also choose to take breakfast with them on their morning game drive.

Lunch, available from midday to 3 PM, is buffet-style and starts with a plated soup as a first course. The soup options may include carrot and ginger, accompanied by mixed seed bread, feta, and pesto for dipping. The buffet usually features dishes such as seared chicken with lemon sauce, fried calamari, various vegetables, salads, and an assortment of desserts.

Dinner is served at 8:00 PM and consists of a plated three-course meal. There are three main courses to choose from, including steak cooked to order and chicken Milanese. Dessert options included ice creams, sorbets, or a decadent chocolate cake.
