Mount Kenya’s Most Dramatic Route, Done Right
Ask any experienced East Africa trekking guide which route up Mount Kenya they’d choose if the decision were entirely their own, and most will say Chogoria without hesitation. The eastern approach is quieter, wilder, and, by almost any measure, the most visually dramatic way to reach the summit. This 4-day Mount Kenya Chogoria route trek takes you up from the east, through bamboo forest and open moorland, past Lake Ellis and the sheer cliffs of the Gorges Valley, to Point Lenana at 4,985m. The descent follows the Sirimon route through Mackinder’s Valley, completing a full traverse of the mountain from east to northwest.
What separates this itinerary from shorter Chogoria options is the pacing. Rather than compressing the descent into a single punishing day, Day 3 brings you down only as far as Liki North Camp (3,900m) after the summit, a gentler finish to the biggest day on the mountain. Day 4 is a relaxed morning descent to Old Moses Camp followed by the drive back to Nairobi. It’s a structure that lets the summit day breathe, and it makes a real difference to how you experience the second half of the trek.
The Chogoria route earns its reputation not through difficulty but through sheer beauty. It is the route beside the Gorges Valley, where 200-metre cliff walls rise on either side and the trail narrows to a path between altitude and sky, that makes this crossing one of the most complete mountain experiences in Africa. Kwezi Safaris has been guiding clients through East Africa’s most iconic terrain for over 20 years.
