Safari Overview

Mt Kenya Trek, Africa’s Second-Highest Peak, in Just 3 Days

Standing at 5,199 metres, Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain and one of the continent’s most rewarding trekking destinations. This 3-day Mt Kenya trek via the Sirimon Route is the most accessible and scenic way to reach Point Lenana, the trekking summit at 4,985m, without spending weeks on the mountain. Starting from Nairobi, you’ll ascend through ancient montane forest, bamboo belts, giant heather moorland, and open alpine valleys, each zone more dramatic than the last.

The Sirimon Route approaches from the northwest, on the drier side of the mountain, making it not only visually striking but also more forgiving in terms of weather and terrain compared to other routes. The path winds through Mackinder’s Valley โ€” a high-altitude corridor framed by jagged peaks โ€” before ascending to Shipton Camp, your base for summit night. For trekkers joining a Kenya safari, this route pairs beautifully with time on the Laikipia Plateau or the plains of Amboseli, all within easy reach.

Kwezi Safaris has been guiding guests through East Africa’s most iconic landscapes for over 20 years. On this 3-day Mt Kenya trek, you’ll be accompanied by experienced, certified mountain guides who know this terrain in every season. Our small-group approach means personal attention, flexible pacing, and a trek that feels curated โ€” not cattle-driven. Every detail, from your Nairobi pickup to your hot meal at Shipton Camp, is handled so you can focus on the mountain in front of you.

Itinerary

3-Day Mt Kenya Trek Sirimon Route โ€” Day by Day

The Sirimon Route is widely regarded as the best-balanced approach to Mount Kenya โ€” long enough to acclimatise properly, short enough to fit a 3-day schedule, and consistently more beautiful than the alternatives. On this itinerary, you ascend through five ecological zones, spend two nights on the mountain, and summit Point Lenana before sunrise on Day 3, descending all the way back to Nairobi in a single day.

This trek covers approximately 53 kilometres in total. Daily hiking times range from 3 to 8 hours depending on terrain, and the summit push on Day 3 begins in the early hours of the morning โ€” a deliberate choice, since the frozen ground in the pre-dawn hours makes the scree slopes significantly safer and more stable underfoot.
