Where You'll Stay

A short escape with more packed in than its size suggests

Naivasha sits close enough to Nairobi for a weekend, but holds enough genuinely distinct attractions to fill several days: a national park you can explore on foot without a guide or vehicle, a private island where wildlife roams without a single predator, and the actual former home of the woman behind Born Free. It’s less about wildlife density and more about variety packed into a small, accessible area.

We have stayed at properties around the lake and near Hell’s Gate. Below is what each offers, and what makes this region worth more than a passing stop.

Hell's Gate

The only Kenyan park you can walk or cycle through freely

Hell’s Gate National Park holds no large predators dangerous enough to require a vehicle, which makes it the only national park in Kenya where visitors can walk or cycle its trails without a guide requirement. Towering cliffs, geothermal steam vents and Fischer’s Tower, a popular rock-climbing spot, gave the park its reputation as a filming inspiration for The Lion King’s landscapes. A geothermal spa near the park entrance makes a natural stop after a morning on the trails.

Crescent Island

A private walking safari with no predators at all

Crescent Island, a private wildlife sanctuary on Lake Naivasha, holds giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala with no predators present, which means visitors can walk directly among the animals on foot, a genuinely different experience from a standard game drive. Boat access to the island doubles as a chance to see the lake’s substantial hippo population and birdlife along the way.

The lake

A freshwater lake with over 400 recorded bird species

Lake Naivasha sits at the highest elevation of any lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley, a freshwater lake supporting hippos, African fish eagles and hundreds of other recorded bird species along its papyrus-lined shores. Boat rides here are typically shorter and calmer than a full-day safari activity, making the lake an easy half-day addition to a longer stay.

History

Elsamere, the real former home of Joy Adamson

Elsamere, on the lake’s shore, was the actual home of Joy and George Adamson, whose work rehabilitating the lioness Elsa became the book and film Born Free. Now a conservation centre and small museum, it houses Joy’s original paintings and personal artifacts, alongside a long-standing afternoon tea tradition on the lawn, often visited by troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys

Logistics

Close enough for a weekend, easy to extend

At 1.5 to 2 hours from Nairobi by road, Naivasha works well as either a standalone short break or an easy first or final stop attached to a longer Kenya itinerary, close enough that travel time never becomes the story of the trip.

Why Plan Through Kwezi Safaris

01

We have stayed at properties around the lake

Our recommendations reflect direct experience, not just proximity to Nairobi.

02

We know which activities are worth the half-day

Hell's Gate, Crescent Island, Elsamere, Longonot, matched honestly to how much time you have.

03

Private guiding, never a shared vehicle

Every stay we arrange is built around your own itinerary, not a fixed group schedule.

04

13+ years of relationships with Naivasha's lodges
