Aberdare National Park, located in central Kenya within the Aberdare Mountain Range, covers about 767 km² and is well known for its cool climate, misty peaks, dense forests, and dramatic waterfalls such as Karuru and Gura. The park features diverse habitats ranging from tropical montane forests and bamboo zones to open moorlands and alpine heath, offering a striking contrast to Kenya’s lowland savannahs. It is rich in wildlife, hosting elephants, buffalos, leopards, black rhinos, and rare species like the bongo antelope, giant forest hog, and golden cat, alongside primates and more than 250 bird species. Visitors enjoy unique lodge experiences at Treetops and The Ark, where animals gather at waterholes and salt licks, especially at night. Beyond wildlife viewing, the park also offers hiking, trout fishing, birdwatching, and cultural history most famously as the place where Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952. With its mix of dramatic landscapes, rare wildlife, and historical significance, Aberdare is one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari destinations.
