Point Lenana on Mount Kenya is a challenging and enjoyable trekking peak at 4895 metres which is accessible for most fit walkers. From the summit there is a beautiful view of the dramatic volcanic massif and the two main peaks of Batian and Nelion, as well as long views over the central plains of Kenya.
The Chogoria route is our recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges Valley truly spectacular.
The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks and completes the traverse of the mountain. Accommodation on this trek is 3 nights in mountain huts and 2 nights camping. Nonetheless, if you prefer to camp you can do so on all nights on the mountain.
Day 1: Depart to Nanyuki, starting point for the hike.
You'll leave for Nanyuki early in the morning to start off the trek at the scheduled time. You'll have breakfast in Nanyuki. The morning is spent sorting and organizing equipment for the mountain trek and being driven to the Sirimon gate.
Begin the climb with an easy 3 hrs hike through the equatorial forest to Judmaier's Camp (3,300m) for an overnight stay at a high altitude in mountain tents.
Day 2: Exploring one of the broadest valleys, Mackinder Valley
After an early morning breakfast, we leave and start our hike towards the breathtaking Mackinder Valley. Hike up to the Mackinder's Valley one of the broadest valleys created by a receding glacier which boasts spectacular views of the prominent peaks – Batian and Nelion. Overnight at Shipton's Camp just below the prominent peaks. Walking time is approximately 6-7 hours and overnight in high altitude tents. Lunch will be en-route.
Day 3: Hiking up to Point Lenana
Alpine ascent to Pt. Lenana (4,985m) along the north face little use by tourists. Lenana is the mountain's third-highest peak, and the views are spectacular when the sun comes up. Four hours of stiff walking to the summit. Then descend to Mintos Camp for breakfast and a welcome rest. In the afternoon have a walk down to Vivian Falls, and Lake Michealson and marvel at the breathtaking views of the Gorges Valley. Proceed back to the camp for dinner and overnight in tents
Day 4: Gentle Descend
After breakfast descend down to Meru Bandas for an overnight stay. At the camp, there are refreshing drinks on sale and the opportunity to enjoy a hot shower.
Day 5: Drive through the Forest
After breakfast, you will be picked up by vehicle from Meru Bandas and drive through the beautiful natural forest to Chogoria town and take the scenic route back to Naro Moru River Lodge via Meru Town and Nanyuki. Then. it's back to Nairobi arriving late in the afternoon.
